Fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether

brief introduction
Fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether, alcohol ether (AE0). It is the fastest developing and most widely used variety of non ionic surfactants. This type of surfactant is prepared by addition reaction between fatty alcohols and ethylene oxide, expressed by the following general formula: R-O - (CH2CH2O) n-H. [1]
R is generally a saturated or unsaturated C12-18 hydrocarbon group, which can be a straight chain hydrocarbon group or a branched chain hydrocarbon group. N is the addition number of ethylene oxide, which is the number of oxygen vinyl groups in the surfactant molecule. The larger the n, the more oxygen on the hydrophilic group of the molecule, which can form more hydrogen bonds with water, resulting in better water solubility. When n=1-5, the product is soluble in oil but not in water, and is often used as a raw material for preparing sulfate anionic surfactants. When n=6-8, it is soluble in water and commonly used as a detergent and oil emulsifier for textiles. When n=10-20, it is used as an emulsifier and leveling agent in industry. [1]
When the carbon chain R is C7-9 and n=5, the fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether generated is called the Penetrating Agent JFC (Penetrating Agent JFC) in industry. When the carbon chain R is C12-18 and n=15-20, the generated fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether is called Peregal O in industry. When the carbon chain R is C12, the generated fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether is commonly known as AEO. [1]
Preparation
Using sodium hydroxide as a catalyst, long-chain fatty alcohols undergo ring opening polymerization with ethylene oxide in the absence of water and oxygen, resulting in the formation of fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether non ionic surfactants [1]:
Characteristics of fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether
The number of ethoxyl groups in fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether molecules can be artificially adjusted during the synthesis process, so a series of non ionic surfactants with different properties and uses can be prepared. Fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether is the most important type of non ionic surfactant. The ether bond in the molecule is not easy to be destroyed by acid and alkali, so it has high stability, good water solubility, electrolyte resistance, easy biodegradation and small foam. In addition to being widely used in the textile printing and dyeing industry, it is also widely used for compounding low foam liquid detergents. [1]

Penetrant JFC is used in the textile printing and dyeing industry for processes such as sizing, desizing, boiling, bleaching, carbonization, etc., as a penetration agent for dyeing and finishing baths. It can be used as a leather coating penetrant and a biological enzyme desizing agent. JFC is particularly suitable for chemical fiber refining. [1]
